Vodafone Cook Islands has been recognised at the PTC 26 Awards ceremony in Honolulu, Hawai’i, receiving the Pacific Region Impact Award for its work with water utilities provider To Tatou Vai (TTV), delivering an end-to-end smart water management solution for the Cook Islands.
The award celebrates significant contributions to advancing digital infrastructure and connectivity within the Pacific Region, including support for remote island communities, bridging the digital divide, and promoting global digital inclusion.
The Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) is a non-profit organisation committed to advancing digital infrastructure, telecommunications, and ICT on a global scale, with a focus on the Pacific Rim. PTC serves as a central hub within the digital infrastructure community, nurturing innovation, fostering business growth, and promoting collaboration through a range of events and initiatives, including the annual PTC Conference where the Awards are presented.
Since 2023, Vodafone Cook Islands has partnered with TTV to deliver a comprehensive smart water solution that extends well beyond application development. Vodafone Cook Islands sourced and supplied the smart water meters, provides and hosts the smart meter management system, and enables the secure collection of metering and billing data across its dedicated Vodafone IoT network.
The smart mobile application developed as part of the solution provides customers and operators with real-time water usage data, leak alerts, and remote monitoring capabilities, creating a more efficient, sustainable, and customer-friendly water system.
Driving the initiative was Tamati Iro, Vodafone Cook Islands’ Project Lead, who worked closely with the TTV team to design and implement the smart water solution. His leadership and expertise were instrumental in delivering a solution that not only modernises water management but also sets a benchmark for digital innovation in the Pacific.
"It’s a great feeling to see our hard work recognised on an international stage. This award is a testament to the dedication of our team and the positive impact technology can have for island communities,” says Iro.
“This award proves that with the right partnerships, technology, and local expertise, even small nations can deliver industry-leading solutions,” says Philip Henderson, CEO of Vodafone Cook Islands.
“This is a recognition of the Cook Islands community, our commitment to sustainability, and the impact digital solutions can have on everyday life,” Henderson added.
Reflecting on the broader significance of the partnership, Apii Timoti, CEO of TTV, said "We congratulate Vodafone Cook Islands on this well-deserved recognition. This partnership has delivered great results and we are very pleased to continue this collaboration into the long term."
Through this solution, smart water meters now provide automatic readings, digital billing, and leak detection, enabling TTV to optimise water production, reduce costs, and support a more sustainable water supply.
Vodafone Cook Islands’ work demonstrates how technology and innovation can address pressing challenges in island communities, while also highlighting the Cook Islands as a leader in digital transformation within the Pacific region.
